Snake gourd-Viper

This is the most common variety of snake gourd found in Southern India. One can expect gourds that are 3-4 feet long. This vine plant grows vigorously and is very prolific. In India it is a common sight to see them growing with rocks tied to their ends so they don't curl. 

Latin Name: Trichosanthes cucumerina

Planting Guidance: Snakegourd prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It prefers moist soil. Scarification and 24 hour soaking is recommended for seed germination. It is best to start these seeds indoors 4-6 week prior to last frost
