Turmeric Plant

The turmeric plant, or Cucuma longa, is ready to be planted into a larger pot or into the garden. They will multiply underground and form more rhizomes. When the leaves dry and die the rhizomes can be harvested, dried and powdered into turmeric powder or used like ginger root peeled, and cut into match sticks, cubes or coins and added to food or smoothies. Turmeric has many medicinal uses and is being sold as an herbal supplement. The following are some of the known benefits: Turmeric is a natural painkiller and Cox-2 inhibitor. May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management. Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Planting Guidance: Keep dry when dormant. Regularly mulch to keep moisture in the soil and keep the rhizomes cool. Rhizomes left in the ground during wet Winters may rot, so they are best lifted and stored in a warm, dry place, then planted out again in Spring. Cut back watering during Winter months.
