Spearmint Plant

Spearmint, or Mentha spicata, is known as pudina in India. Mint is an essential ingredient in many Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine and is popularly mixed with natural plain yogurt to make a 'raita' or brewed with tea to make the famous Indian 'Pudina Chai'. It can also be used in making pudina chutney, pudina paratha, and pudina pulao. Here in the West the leaves are muddled with sugar, ice, and rum and is an essential ingredient in the popular cocktail known as a Mojito. Pudina is loaded with antioxidants and phytonurients and hence helps keep stomach cramps and acidity at bay. Crushed mint leaves helps in whitening teeth and combat bad breath.
