Sitaphal/Custard Apple Plant

Sitaphal/Custard Apple, or Annona squamosa is a small tree that is native to the Americas and West Indes. It does well in tropical climate, which explains its broad proliferation across tropical Asia. It made it way to Asia through Spanish galleon voyages.  The fruit are regarded for their taste, nutritional, and caloric value. Its leaves are also used in medicinal preparations across many cultures.

These deciduous trees are known to produce fruit 3-4 months after flowering, once reaching the proper maturity.

Soil
Annona squamosa prefers rich, well-drained, light, sandy loam soil with a pH of around 6, but can also grow in rocky, alkaline soils with a pH up to 8. You can add sand and potting soil if needed.
Water
Water regularly, especially during the growing and fruiting seasons, but avoid overwatering and water logging. In the winter, water every two to four weeks to prevent the soil from drying out completely.
Sunlight
Annona squamosa prefers full sun or part shade, but will produce the best fruit in more sun.
Temperature
Annona squamosa grows best in temperatures ranging from 73–94°F (23–34°C). It also benefits from 70% or higher relative humidity during flowering and fruit set.
Fertilizer
Feed young trees every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a complete fertilizer designed for fruit trees. You can also repot the plant once a year or after it doubles in size to replenish nutrients. Stop fertilizing after the fruit is picked in the fall.
Planting
Plant outdoors between the end of the risk of frost and the end of August. Space plants 15–20 feet (4.5–6 m) away from other trees or buildings.
Protection
Annona squamosa trees may benefit from wind protection, such as windbreaks, to decrease the drying effect of winds and increase relative humidity. You can also protect individual fruit from pests by covering them with paper bags.
Pruning
You can prune the tree to keep it from growing too tall and fit it into your garden.
