Description
Sacred Pepper, or Piper sanctum, a relative of Indian Betel Leaf and Black Pepper. It is also known as Mexican Pepperleaf, Yerba Santa, among other names throughout the Americas. This perennial plant has heart shaped velvety leaves that are very similar in appearance to its relatives. This plant is native to the Americas and is used in Mexico for various cooking purposes.
This plant has a high concentration of safrole, the main component in sassafras, and the original root beer recipe. Its leaves can smell a little like root beer when rubbed against your fingers, but its leaves have a peppery flavor reminiscent of Indian Betel Leaf when chewed.
The main foliage of this plant is known to be hardy to about 32 degrees farenheit, and its root system is known to survive temperatures below freezing.
