Dwarf Papaya Seeds-Blush Beauty
Description
Papaya (Carica papaya) is a species that originates in Central America, but found its way to Asia through Spanish galleon voyages in the 1500’s. India has now become the largest producer of Papaya, supplying close to half of the world supply of Papaya.
Papaya trees grow to an average height of 16-33 ft tall, however dwarf hybrid varieties are capable of bearing fruit as low as 2 ft in height on the tree. They typically have a single stem with leaves that spiral around the tree. The leaves are large, lobed, and palmate in their appearance. In the right climate Papaya trees can flower 4 months after planting and product fruit 7-11 months after planting.
Papaya trees are by nature, dioecious, which means their male and female flowers grow on separate plants. Gynodioecious hybrids are favored for commercial fruit production, as they are self pollinating.
Blush Beauty is a gynodioecious dwarf hybrid.
Papaya seeds naturally have a germination inhibiting coating on them that should be carefully removed prior to sowing to increase germination rate and speed.
