Description
Malabar Neem, or Melia dubia, is a fast growing relative of the Neem tree, that is is indigenous to India. It is a plant that is cultivated for its medicinal and industrial applications. The leaves have a similar taste to the Neem tree, although less intense, and are known to have similar medicinal applications. It has been implicated in antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antioxident, as well as antibacterial, antiviral, and fungicidal applications.
The wood has come to become an important and lucrative cash crop in India as well, as its wood is known to be resistant to termites. They are capable of being viable for industrial applications after 3-5 years in the ground. This application has increased its popularity over the years.
These trees can grow up to 6-30 meters tall and are typically found in temperatures of at least 70 degrees. They can survive in many different types of soil, but do best with a soil pH from 5.5-7.
