Lukat(Loquat) Tree

Lukat/Loquat or Eriobotrya japonica is an evergreen tree that is cultivated for ornamental purposes, as well as its fruit.  While native to southern China, Loquat is commercially cultivated in India. A majority of the cultivation occurs within Punjab.  The trees can grow as tall as 5-10 meters tall, but average around 3-4 meters.  Loquat is unusual in its fruiting as it flowers and bears fruit from Autumn through Spring. 

Lukat fruit grow in clusters. The fruit are ovular, round, or pear shaped, and range from orange to yellow in color;. The fruit are typically sweetest when they are soft and yellow.

Planting Guidance: To grow Eriobotrya japonica (Loquat) in a pot, choose a large, well-draining pot and use a high-quality potting mix. Provide the plant with 6-8 hours of full sun daily. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy, and fertilize with a balanced fertilizer 2-3 times during the growing season. Prune lightly in late winter to maintain a manageable size and encourage fruiting.

Pot and Soil
Pot Size: Select a large pot, at least 18-24 inches wide and deep, to accommodate the tree's growth.
Drainage: Ensure the pot has excellent drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
Potting Mix: Use a well-draining potting mix that includes organic matter like compost, and amendments such as sand or perlite for drainage.
Repotting: Loquats are fast-growing and can become root-bound, so consider repotting annually or when the plant outgrows its container.
Light and Watering
Sunlight: Loquats thrive in full sun, requiring 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Watering: Water deeply when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering, as the tree can be drought-tolerant but does best with regular watering.
Fertilizing and Pruning
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) 2-3 times during the growing season to replenish soil nutrients.
Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or after the harvest to shape the tree, remove dead or overcrowded branches, and improve airflow and fruit quality.
Additional Tips
Site Selection: Place the potted loquat in a sunny location, such as a patio or sunroom.
Pest Control: Indoors, monitor for mealybugs (woolly white insects) on stems and leaves.
Fruit Production: Pruning tips and pinching off the newest growth can encourage more branches and fruit production.
