Description
Jackfruit or Artocarpus heterophyllus is a tree species that is related to fig and breadfruit. Jackfruit is considered to be the largest tree grown fruit, with staggering fruit weights up to 120 pounds! Jackfruit trees in the right climate, can grow to a size of 30-60 feet, and can produce hundreds of fruit in a single season.
Jackfruit is the state fruit of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and was domesticated in the Indian Subcontinent. The fruit is sweet when ripe, and can be used for desserts. The fruit can also be used to make South Indian delicacies like Idlis and Dosa. It can also be made into savory curry. The fruit is also commonly freeze dried and served as chips. Jackfruit is now being recognized as a an excellent meat substitute, because of its textural and nutritional qualities. For those on a plant based diet, Jackfruit can give a shredded meat like texture for dishes, and with its mild flavor, it is easily amenable to many flavors profiles.

*Jackfruit leaves are known to be temperamental when settling in to their new environment. It is not uncommon for leaves to turn yellow, or dry up in transit, or within a day or two of arrival. This is not cause for alarm and is in the nature of the species. Ensure not to overwater during this time. Simply clip off the yellow leaves to help minimize energy expenditure for the plant while it acclimates, and ensure be gradual with your transitions.
