Hami Melon (Kharbooza)

Hami Melon, a popular Asian muskmelon(Kharbooza) variety of Cucumis melo. Hami Melon has a very sweet taste with a crisp texture, which are commonly eat raw as a snack or in fruit salads or dessert.  They are known for their yellow netted skin. Given a rising demand of exotic fruit in India, Hami Melon have found their ways into gourmet grocery stores and online platforms in India.

Planting Guidance: Hami melons (winter melons) thrive in the U.S. when grown in full sun (6-8+ hours), fertile, well-drained soil, and warm conditions (65°F+ soil). Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost or direct sow when soils are warm. Space plants 2-3 feet apart, fertilize regularly with low-nitrogen fertilizer, and water at the base.

Location & Soil: Select a spot with full sun. Prepare soil with ample compost and form 6-8 inch high mounds to improve drainage and soil warmth.
Spacing: Space plants 2-3 feet apart, or 18-24 inches apart in rows spaced 5-6 feet apart.
Watering: Water consistently at the soil level to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
Growing Vertically: Trellising saves space and improves air circulation. Support heavy fruits with netting or pantyhose.
Harvesting: Hami melons are ready in 80–100 days when the skin develops a yellow/tan undertone, a sweet fragrance develops, and the stem end softens slightly.
