Hyacinth Bean-Green Mochai

Green Mochai, Mochaikai or Dolichos is a variety of hyacinth bean popular in Tamil Nadu grown for the dry bean, high in protein. Often described as “Green Peas with pods” and dark green in colour, pods need to be peeled to remove the seeds, which are then used for cooking. Try the dried seed or bean in "Kuzhambu"!

Planting Guidance: This bean can grow in a wide range of soil textures, from heavy clays, if well drained, to sandy soils. It is normally adapted to the same areas as cowpeas. It tolerates acidic soils better than most legumes, growing well when soil pH is 4.5–6.5, and it does well in low fertility soils.
