Desi Red Onion Seeds-Pyaari

Red Onion, or Alium cepa is popular in cuisine all over the world. Our Pyaari variety is popular among growers, and similar to a Bombay Red onion. They mature between 100-120 days. They can be started indoors in shorter season climates and transplanted outdoors when seedlings are approx. 4-6" tall. This variety has a good storage quality and is medium in size and pungency with a slight sweetness, making it a versatile onion.

Planting Guidance: Red Onion Seed Planting Guide
Timing: Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your average last frost date.
Indoor Seeding: Sow seeds

Transplanting: Transplant seedlings outside 2–4 weeks before the last spring frost. They are hardy and can handle light frosts.
Spacing: Plant 3–4 inches apart in rows 12–18 inches apart to maximize bulb size.
Soil: Onions require light, rich, well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0–6.8
Care and Maintenance
Watering: Due to shallow roots, onions need consistent moisture, especially during bulb development. Ensure they receive 1 inch of water weekly.
Fertilizing: Onions are heavy feeders. Side-dress with nitrogen fertilizer in May and June to encourage growth.
Weed Control: Keep the area weed-free, as weeds compete with the shallow roots.
Harvesting: Harvest when the tops turn yellow and fall over. Cure them in a dry place for 2–3 weeks
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Overwatering/Underwatering: Inconsistent watering leads to small bulbs or rotting.
Planting Too Deep: Planting onion sets or transplants deeper than 1 inch can prevent proper bulb formation.
Incorrect Variety for Region: Using long-day onions in the south (or vice-versa) will lead to poor bulbing.
Overcrowding: Not thinning seedlings prevents them from reaching full size.
Skipping Curing: Improperly curing (drying) onions before storage will cause them to rot.
