Description
The Bodhi Tree, or Peepal is the appropriately named Ficus religiosa species is a plant of spiritual significance in 3 major Indian religions (Hinduism,Buddhism, & Jainism). Also known as Peepal, Asvattha,or Bodhi tree, it has long been regarded by Hindu and Jain asetics as an ideal sacred spot for meditation. Gautauma Buddha is known to have attained enlightment while meditating under a Peepal, or Bodhi Tree. Peepal is known for its unique leaf shape. It is not uncommon for its large leaves to be used as canvases for paintings. They also sport impessive trunks that rival their cousins, the Banyan tree. They are able to survive various climates and conditons. While its figs are used for medicinal and culinary purposes by some, this tree has maintained its high regard since ancient times due to its religious and symbolic importance.
