Description
Bhut Jolokia, or Ghost Pepper, is a hybrid Capsicum chinense and Capsicum frutescens hybrid that is cultivated in Northeast India. In 2007, this pepper was named the world hottest pepper. While it was dethroned by other peppers such as Carolina Reaper, and Pepper X, Ghost pepper boasts a pungency rate of over 1 million Scoville units.
While it is often believe that Bhut in the name is a reference to the word Ghost, it is actually a reference to Bhutan in Assamese. It can also be called by other names in different regions of India, ranging from Bih zolokia, naga jolokia, Tezpur, & King Cobra Chili.
