Banana-Basjoo-Limited Stock
Description
Basjoo is the cold hardiest member of the Musa family. They can grow to an average height of 6-8 ft. They are known to be hardy in zones as cold as 4! If properly insulated with mulch/ tarp, it is known to withstand temperatures as low as 10-14 degrees F. Even if the Pseudostem is killed by the cold, this variety is known to send up new growth when conditions improve. Musa Basjoo produces fruit, however it is predominantly used as an ornamental, or for its strong fibers. The fruit are generally tiny and most consider them to be inedible. However, they are eaten in Japan as a delicacy, where it is considered it to be an acquired taste. This variety is a great addition to any Banana lovers plant collection, but especially for gardeners in colder climates. If you predominantly use Banana plants for their leaves, then this is the one for you!
