Description
Alphonso Mango is a variety of Mangifera indica that originated in India in the 1500's. Grafting of mango trees was introduced to India in Portuguese occupied Goa by Jesuit missionaries. This is where the variety owes it origin. This is why the variety's namesake is a Portuguese Viceroy, Afonso de Albuquerque. This variety became wildly popular across India and other parts of the world and is considered to be one of the most expensive mango varieties. They are prized for the creamy, rich, juicy, non fibrous nature of their fruit.
Alphonso mango is a seasonal variety. After reaching the proper maturity, they take about 90 days from flowering to harvest. They typically produce fruit through April-June in the right climate.
