Amaranthus-Stem Amaranth

This is a variety of Amaranthus grown for its stems. It is popular in West Bengal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The stems can be cooked with peppers, onions, garlic and spices and has a texture similar to asparagus.

Planting Guidance: Amaranthus seeds can be sown directly into the soil or started indoors 4-6 weeks. If sowing directly, wait until the soil has warmed up to at least 65°F (18°C). Sow the seeds 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) deep and 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) apart.
